PLACES

The art of coming home

We spend a lot of time talking about places to go. This one is about the place you come back to.

Evening light at home

There is a moment at the end of a long day — keys in the door, bag down, shoes off — that tells you almost everything about a place. Either your shoulders drop, or they don't.

We have stayed in beautiful hotels where that moment never quite came. Everything was perfect and nothing was yours. And we've stayed in a friend's spare room where it arrived instantly, because someone had left a lamp on and a glass by the bed.

Small signals

Coming home is built from small signals. Lights at a warm temperature. A place to put things down by the door. The smell of somewhere clean but not chemical. Being greeted by name rather than room number.

“Everything was perfect and nothing was yours.”

None of these appear on a booking site. You can't filter for them. But they're the reason some places feel like a stay and others feel like a life.

That's what we try to get right, every day, at every Haus. Not the arrival — the return.
